(Evening)
Wade flapped her wings hard to gain altitude. It was dark and cold - there were few thermals around for soaring. But she was glad of the workout. She'd just spent the last 4 hours doing extra homework set by her parents, on top of her regular homework. There'd been a football match shown on Sky what she'd wanted to watch, but her mother insisted that she work harder on her violin practise. So a bit of physical work was great - a break from those mindnumbing essays. Wade loved sport, especially American football, but her parents deeply disaproved of it. You won't get to Harvard kicking a ball around a field, they told her. She didn't tell them that the only way they would ever be able to afford an Ivy leage university was through a sports scholarship. Wade left the city behind, flying over the suburbs, then eventually, out over the rural fields and woodland. Soon, she had found what she was looking for. A large red barn, surrounded by paddocks, ponds and more fields. The whole farm looked deserted, even the old farmhouse was unoccupied. Wade wasn't sure if it had been boarded up, or sold to developers, or if it was part of the same contract for the barn. The old barn used to belong to one of the original Animorph's families, and had been thier unoffical HQ. Now, years later, the family had passed the barn on to the new Animorphs, who still used it as their base - secret from the Yeerks then, secret from them now. Wade, being quite a new Animorph, had only visited once before, well, perhaps visited wasn't quite the word. She'd been kidnapped by Claire and some of the other Animorphs, locked up and watched for three days because they'd confused her with a known Controller. Now, a real Animorph, Wade was making her way there for her first meeting. She tucked back her wings and descended through the sky windows into the rafters - unknown to her, an echo of Tobias's habits years before. The place was still deserted - it was still early for the meeting, so she hopped down to the ground and demorphed. Demorphing was still a wierd experience for her. She only had three morphs, and harrier was the one she used the most often (she didn't tell them, but she hadn't actually tried out the roach morph yet. Waaay too gross.) but it still freaked her out. As the last of the brownish-amber feathers mented into skin, and her laser-like vision blurred, she sat shivering on a hay bale, dressed only in her leotard, waiting for the others to arrive.

A light tapping sound was all that could be heard in the silent barn. It repeated over and over, in a slight pattern of three quick beats, a pause and then it started all over again. A pair of cool blue eyes flicked around, taking in all the surroundings. Those she was expecting might not be arriving in the usual manner. Some might come in through the broken window up in the loft, while others might come in through a crack in the wooden walls. And the others might just enter through the door, like she had. But there was no way of knowing, and so Ash kept those calm eyes looking everywhere at some point. She was paranoid that way.
Glancing at the glowing face of her watch, Ash paused in her continual drumming of fingers. “They’re late.” Was the only thing she said. Of course, no specific time had been given, only to come around dark. That way only those with the best eyes or ears would know that they were going anywhere. The insistent thrumming began again, accompanied by Ash moving her eyes around more. The skin-tight clothes she wore under her normal garb suddenly felt too tight, and Ash began to worry. The others were only a little late though, she reminded herself, and began to breathe easier once more. She could panic if they weren’t at the barn in 20 minutes. Not when they were only 5 minutes late.
Then there was a fluttering sound. It was barely noticable, but Ash knew what to expect. As a Northern Harrier landed upon the ground in front of her, Ash averted her gaze. Some of the Animorphs didn't like to be seen demorphing, and Ash personally didn't like to watch the generally gruesome change. When the shadow of the newcomer had stopped shifting in the moonlight, Ash returned her gaze, and nodded.
"Congratulations. You're the first to get here, Wade Nicole."

(OOC: Any slowness is due to the essays I have to deal with in my classes ><)
Jamie had left her house after being forced to cook dinner for her hungry aunt, uncle, and cousin, who, sadly, did not share with her. When she finished, she headed into her room. It was already dusk when she headed out with some money for some food from McDonald's, where she headed to pick up a cheeseburger, fries, and a soda. Then she headed to the barn, eating on the way. She hadn't had time for Ramen noodles, and just didn't feel like it.
She made her way down the dirt road and finally made it to the abandoned barn, tossing her trash in a trash can along the way. She finally made it to the barn, and entered. "Sorry," she immediately said. "My aunt and uncle made me cook for them, and then I had to get something to eat." She sighed. Her life was pretty bad, but she wasn't one to speak about it...

Hearing Ash's voice, Wade looked up - startled but not frightened. "Ah, hello," she said, her accent a strange mixture of Icelandic and British, with the smallest hint of a Texan drawl. "I didn't realise anyone else was hear yet. I did wonder what that tapping sound was though!" She tugged at her leotard, wishing she was able to morph something warmer. Sitting there barefoot on the bale, Wade looked most unlike the member of an army. Younger than the others, small, skinny, with a boyish figure in her skin-hugging morphing suit, Wade hoped that the other members would take her seriously and not treat her like a child. The last thing she wanted was to be patronised.
A moment later, Wade heard the sound of a car pulling up outside the barn. For a moment she was nervous - Controllers? - and glanced at Ash for advice. But seconds later, the car doors opened and two voices were heard. They sounded like they were bickering. "Sebastian, a Ford Mondeo doesn't look like it belongs on a farm," an older girl could be heard saying. "Especially not one as clean as yours. It looks way too suspicious." Wade recognised their voices as Claire Cosine and Sebastian Iovane, who she had met briefly during her initiation into the Animorphs. "Well then, next time you drive," Sebastian replied dryly. "Maybe you could conjure up a tractor from thin air? Or perhaps a Land Rover? Would that fit in better?" "Haha. Like I could afford a Land Rover on the pitiful salary you pay me. I can't even afford the petrol for a little Renault Cleo. That's why I have the fun of sharing with you." The two of them entered the barn. Hey, I think there's some others here already." They setted down onto the hay bales - just like Marco or Jake from earlier days. "Hey guys," Claire said, then raised her eyebrows. "Are we the only ones who drove?" "I came in morph," Wade replied bluntly. She still hadn't totally forgiven Clare for keeping her locked up for three days. "Ah, I see," Claire replied. "Sheesh, you must be cold. Have my coat." She passed Wade the jacket she was wearing. Wade shugged and took it. "Just us five so far?" Sebastian asked Ash.

OOC: No problem. I'll probably be slow too.
Ash nodded as first Jamie, and then Claire and Sebastian entered. She was wondering when Jonathan would show up, or if he would be able to come here at all today. SHe hadn't really given him a chance to reply earlier. She was glad that Wade had not been frightened by Ash's seemingly sudden appearance.
"No problem Jamie." She then replied to Sebastian's comment. "Yeah. I don't know if Jon will be coming tonight or not though. And I walked." Ash herself wore a thick jacket over her morphing suit. Under that she had a sweater. She felt cold very easily, and didn't like it one bit. She turned her blue eyes directly to Claire. It was mainly because of Claire that this meeting had been called.
"So, what have you learned? If anyone else shows up, then we can tell them what they've missed, so go ahead."

Sebastian answered at first. "Well, we thought it would be a good idea to share all our knowledge," he started, before Claire took over. "That Lawrence Weisberger Controller we've been following?" Claire said. "I was watching him last night in fly morph, and Sebastian's been watching him again this morning, at work. He often comes into the coffee shop next door to where we work." "It's been difficult to get any leads on the location of a Yeerk Pool entrance," Sebastian went on, "but we do have a timeframe at last. Weisberger mentioned something on his mobile phone - some dates. The 1st, 4th and 7th of March." Wade nodded. "Three days apart. We all know what that means for Yeerks." "Yes," Claire replied, who kept feeling left out of the conversation. "That's Thursday, Sunday and next Wednesday. Thursday is three days from now, so he might have even been there tonight as well. If we all keep a good eye on him in the upcoming days, he'll almost certainly show us an entrance. And if we concentrate on those times and days, we don't have to watch him 24/7, so we can keep on going to work, or school." "Not that I'm that keen on knowing where it is," Sebastain said wearily, rubbing his neck. "So if watch him in shifts, we should have a chance. I reckon that it'll be sometime in the evening - the host has an office job, which means he'll have to keep up his human appearences during the day, so he'll only be free after about 6PM." "The wife - Helen Weisberger is probably a Controller too," Sebastain explained, flicking some mud off his coat. "Although we're not a hundred percent." "We can do some research on her," Wade suggested. "I think I've seen her around the high school, but I don't think she teaches there."

Ash nodded as Claire and Sebastian spoke. It was good information to know, but they would have to be careful. One false move and their cover could be blown. Their overall mission would be compromised if any of these people around her slipped up. Or if Ash did. Once again, as it happened so often these days, fear began gnawing at her. Who was she to decide the fate of the world? But then she relaxed. Ash did not have that big of a burden. Jonathan, Jamie, Wade, Claire, Sebastian, they all had part of this load to carry. She did not bear it alone.
"Okay, so we know that. But we've got to be sure about this Helen person. We don't want a repeat of what happened to Wade." She pasued, then continued. "SO this is where we stand. We've got a motley group of humans, all with the ability to morph. The Andalites have left, and show no signs of returning anytime soon. And the Yeerks are beginning the invasion again, with the power to morph also. Any bets on who will win?" Ash hurt inside as she mentioned the Andalites. One of her best friends had been one of them, and had left with the rest of the deer-like creatures.
Ash pulled out a small blue cube from within her jacket, where it had been poking her in the side. It glowed slightly, and cast a faint blue hue around her hands as she handled it. This was the only reason they stood any chance of keeping the humans free.

Claire smirked. "Well, we won once, we can win again," she said brightly, although she didn't sound 100% convinced. Sebastian was more cynical. "That was with the Andalites," he replied. "But only one Andalite, for the majority of the time, rememeber," Wade responded. "But I agree...we certainly do not want a repeat of what happened last time," she grimaced, remembering being locked up in this very barn for three days. "Lawrence is certainly a Controller, we know that much," Sebastian said. "So it makes sense that Helen is as well. The Yeerks are still quite low profile right now - it's like the beginning of the invasion for them all over again." "So they're going to want to make things as easy as possible for themselves as they can," Claire nodded. "Keeping Controllers together is one way to do this." "But we still do not know for sure," Wade remarked. "But I will watch her at school; well, as much as I can. I still have classes of course." Claire was looking at the morphing cube, it's ethreal blue glow looking oddly out of place in the barn - like a miniture aurora. The only other light was moonlight and a small, naked lightbulb hanging from the ceiling. They had to be careful to prevent the barn looking too occupied. "You think we should recruit new members?" she asked. Personally I think we should keep to us for the time being, so that we can concentrate on picking up some new leads." "And not get caught," said Wade, almost reading Ash's mind.

Jon entered, and stood as the conversation continued. It was not in his nature to speak unless he felt it was necessary, and he waited until he deemed that time had come. He stepped forward, his hands tucked into the pockets of his coat, and bit his lip thoughtfully before speaking. "We will win." he said, coming to stand beside Ash, "because we have to. It isn't as if we can surrender and hope for the best. We know what happens if we lose. It's all or nothing."
It wasn't new information, but he thought a reminder was in order. This wasn't a game. It was a fight to survive, and in his experience, those were the kinds of struggles that inspired extraordinary things from ordinary people. Like the group of ordinary-turned-extraordinary people standing around him. His face, and the pale streak of hair that framed one side of it, were cast in the blue glow of the morphing cube. He glanced at Ash, to be sure she would agree with what he said next.
"I think if we're going to recruit anyone, we have to be incredibly careful. I thought of a question last night, and I'm not sure if I know the answer. If a yeerk, if an actual yeerk, has the morphing power and morphs, does that reset their need for Kandrona rays? Could we be dealing with an enemy that may not always have the weakness we've counted on? If so, that could mean that we may not be able to just watch people and make sure they don't disappear into a pool every three days...we'd have to come up with some other way to be sure they're not one of the enemy."

"Well said, Jon." Ash mused after her friend spoke. He certainly had a point; everyone knew what would happen if they lost this time around. All the Animorphs would become Controllers, or be killed. While the former was probably be what happened, the young girl wasn't sure that death was the wose option.
Then Ash got around to answering Claire's question. "No Claire, I don't think we should be recruiting anyone else just yet. Remember, the original Animorphs were holding their own when it was just the 6 of them. And who knows, perhaps the Andalites will return." Ash didn't believe what she had just said, and she would be willing to bet that no one else did either. The Andalites had left, in a manner that had shown they were unlikely to return.
And Jon's question was a good one. But Ash didn't think what he said was the case. She kept it to herself for the moment, but she thought it was unrealistic. The Yeerks might have beeter technology in their possession, but it seemed like they'd have way too much power if they could just reset their Kandrona requirements with one morph. Kind of like every superhero or villan has a weakness and can't be all powerful, it didn't seem possible that the Yeerks could do such a thing. It didn't seem fair.

Claire rubbed the back of her neck, something she did when she was either bothered or concentrating. "Well," she said to Jon, "I guess there's no way to know until it's too late. But scientifically speaking, I really doubt that morphing would reset their clock. It's not like humans don't need to eat or drink water just because they can morph. We still need nutrients - so do they. Their mass goes to Zero Space doesn't it, when they morph. So the Kandrona nutrients they have absortbed would go there, too, and then they'd be back when they demorphed. They can't get any new Kandrona particles any way, can they." "Unless they stay in morph for long periods of time, only demorphing really quickly when necessary," Sebastian said. "Then, maybe the three day limit would only count down when they are in their natural state. So they could actually lengthen the three days to a week or so, just by staying in morph as much as possible." "Yeah but then they wouldn't be able to infest people," Claire said. He shrugged, and the two of them settled into silence. "But I do think we need a plan," Wade said. She had taken off the jacket, and even though it was a coldish evening, she wasn't shivering. Probably tropical temperatures compared to Reykjavik, Claire thought. "About how to find out how the morphing effects them, for a start," Wade continued. "This Kandrona requirement. Whether morphing does reset it and stuff.

Ash sighed deeply before speaking. "Hey guys, we probably shouldn't bother worrying about that. I mean, even if we found out the Yeerks could reset their three day period whenever they morphed, there isn't anything we could do to stop it, is there? With what we know, we have to assume all the Yeerks on earth can morph already." Ash didn't mind being the bearer of bad news, even if it wasn't proven to be bad.
She just didn't feel that the Animorphs needed to get all worked up about something that, in her opinion, they couldn't change even if they wanted to. The Yeerks could morph, and the Human technology was way farther behind what they had. The Andalites were the genius species, compared to humans and some other sentient types of creatures.
